Take one amount: 1,000 units of your own currency. The cost has two parts: a fee, and the gap between the rate you get and the mid-market rate. The tables below add both into one baht figure per provider.

What each route costs, all in

The all-in cost is the mid-market baht value of the amount minus the baht the recipient gets. The figures come from Wise’s comparison pages, read on 14 October 2026 for transfers paid in by bank transfer. Wise is one of the providers in them.

Bank wires and ACH

Bank wires are not in these tables. A wire’s all-in cost adds the sending bank’s outgoing fee and the Thai bank’s buying-rate markup to the Thai bank’s receiving fee. On 1,000 USD the Bangkok Bank percentage is THB 83.9, so the minimum of THB 200 applies.

Bangkok Bank’s New York branch deducts USD 5 plus THB 100 on a US ACH transfer between USD 100 and USD 2,000, about THB 267.8. It converts the money at its Telegraphic Transfer Buying Rate.

Bank wire (SWIFT): what Thai banks charge to receive

Three Thai banks publish the same percentage with different floors.

Bank Receiving fee on an inward wire
Bangkok Bank 0.25%, minimum THB 200, maximum THB 500
SCB 0.25%, minimum THB 300, maximum THB 500
Krungsri (schedule from 1 July 2025) 0.25%, minimum THB 200, maximum THB 500

On a purchase price of three million baht the percentage works out to THB 7,500, so the cap of THB 500 applies. On small amounts the minimum applies instead.

If the money passes through other banks first, another bank may add a handling fee. Bangkok Bank converts incoming foreign currency to baht at its Telegraphic Transfer Buying Rate.

A SWIFT instruction should reach a Bangkok Bank account within 1-2 working days. A recipient with no account who is paid in cash at a Bangkok Bank counter pays the receiving fee plus THB 150 per transaction.

US ACH through Bangkok Bank New York

Bangkok Bank’s New York branch takes ACH transfers in IAT format from the internet banking of US banks, credited to Bangkok Bank accounts in Thailand. Some US banks do not offer international ACH, so ask yours first.

The branch deducts fees by band. For USD 100.01 to 2,000 it is USD 5 plus THB 100. For THB 1,000,000 equivalent up to USD 50,000 it is USD 15 plus 0.25% of the value, minimum THB 200 and maximum THB 500.

Transfer services: Wise, Remitly, Western Union, WorldRemit

Wise uses the live mid-market rate and charges a small, upfront fee. Its send limits are THB 2,000,000 to Kasikorn Bank and Bangkok Bank, THB 1,499,999 to Siam Commercial Bank and THB 500,000 to other banks.

Western Union’s rates and fees vary with the payment and delivery methods. It makes money from the exchange rate. WorldRemit adds fees, its FX rates can change, and it caps a bank transfer at THB 49,999.

For a larger amount, such as a property purchase, a per-transfer cap rules out WorldRemit and favours a bank wire or Wise.

What the sender needs to type

For a wire, the overseas bank needs the recipient’s Bangkok Bank account number and account name. Bangkok Bank’s SWIFT code is BKKBTHBK. SCB’s SWIFT code is SICOTHBK.

State the purpose when the bank asks, and keep the credit advice the Thai bank issues when the money lands.

Rules on the Thai side

Foreign currency or baht can be transferred or brought into Thailand without limit. Buying, selling, exchanging or transferring foreign currency must go through persons licensed by the Minister of Finance, such as authorised banks, money changers and money transfer agents.

Anyone receiving USD 1 million or more from abroad must sell it to an authorised bank, or deposit it there in a foreign currency account, within 360 days of receipt. Bangkok Bank’s FCD account for non-residents opens with a minimum deposit of USD 1,000.

Expect questions on purpose. Bangkok Bank requires the sender to state the purpose of every incoming transfer, because banks report it to the Bank of Thailand. It lists buying a condominium among the purposes.

Cash is different. Bringing in baht banknotes above THB 450,000 or foreign banknotes above USD 15,000 requires a Customs declaration.

Property money and the FX Form

No FX Form is needed: the Bank of Thailand abolished it in 2017, so customers fill in none for foreign-currency transactions with banks, whatever the amount. The bank issues a credit or debit advice as evidence of the transaction. Keep that advice.

Below USD 200,000 the customer states the purpose and the bank asks for no documents. At USD 200,000 or more the bank asks for documents showing the source of the foreign currency. A Dec 2025 circular first set that line for property money.

Tax on money you bring in

A Thai tax resident with foreign-source income who brings it into Thailand includes it in income tax for the year it came in. A tax resident is someone in Thailand 180 days or more in the tax year, which covers a retiree or nomad living in Chiang Mai year-round. The rule applies from 1 January 2024.

Someone in Thailand fewer than 180 days in the tax year is not taxed on that year’s foreign income, even if it is brought in. Savings built abroad in years of non-residence can come in without tax.
