Best Air Purifier in Chiang Mai: Size and Filters Guide

Pick a purifier by room size, not by brand. For wildfire smoke, AHAM recommends a smoke CADR equal to the room's area in square feet; its general rule is two-thirds. EPA's chart pairs 300 square feet with 195. Look for HEPA, no ozone and replaceable filters. A DIY box-fan filter is cheaper.

Start with the floor area of the room. EPA’s sizing chart pairs a room of 300 square feet with a minimum CADR of 195 cfm, and one of 600 square feet with 390. The chart is in square feet. A square metre is a little under eleven square feet, so multiply your room’s area in square metres by that and read the chart with the result.

Size the purifier to the room

CADR is the clean air delivery rate. It indicates the volume of filtered air an air cleaner delivers, with separate scores for tobacco smoke, pollen and dust. The higher the CADR, the more particles it filters and the larger the area it serves.

To find your number, multiply the length and width of the area and compare the result in square feet with the maximum recommended room size on the packaging.

Two rules of thumb give different answers, so pick the stricter one for smoke season. AHAM’s general rule is a CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area. For a 10 by 12 foot room of 120 square feet, that means a smoke CADR of at least 80. For wildfire smoke it recommends a smoke CADR equal to the room’s area in square feet.

For the 300 square foot room, that is 300 against the 195 of EPA’s chart, which sits close to the two-thirds rule.

Adjust for the space. The chart assumes an 8-foot ceiling, and higher ceilings need a higher CADR. Above 8 feet, you need an air cleaner rated for a larger room. For an open floor plan, count the entire space the unit serves; if no unit covers the area, consider several.

What else to check on the box

Check What to look for
Smoke CADR A high CADR for tobacco smoke, which stands for the smallest particles
Filter type HEPA filters often achieve a high CADR
Gases An activated carbon filter; the CADR rating is for particles only
Ozone Avoid units that intentionally produce it, a lung irritant
Low-ozone units The California Air Resources Board and AHAM keep lists of low-ozone units; if your model is not listed, skip any unit that makes ozone on purpose
Test mark The AHAM Verifide mark, usually on the side or back of the packaging
Replacement filters Typically replaced every 60 to 90 days; off-brand filters may fail the original’s performance

Running it matters too. A unit filters less air at a lower speed, and the CADR rating is typically measured at the highest speed. Keep it away from curtains and anything that might block airflow.

For what to do on smoky days besides running a purifier, see reading PM2.5 and the AQI in Chiang Mai and the burning season guide.

A cheaper option: the box-fan filter

A DIY air cleaner made with a box fan and a MERV 13 filter is a cost-effective way to reduce smoke concentrations. Adding a cardboard shroud increases its CADR by 40% at no change in cost or footprint.

Two cautions. Dirty filters made DIY air cleaners almost completely ineffective, so keep spare filters. Use only newer, certified box fans with added safety features, 2012 models or newer.

Commercial air cleaners can be hard to get in smoky conditions because of limited availability or high cost.

Prices and models at HomePro

HomePro is a national chain whose Chiang Mai branch, HomePro Ruamchok, opened opposite Kad Ruam Chok in late 2024. Its online listing of air purifiers is a way to see the price range before you shop. These are the seller’s figures from one day, not a ranking.

Model Room size the seller states Price, 14 Oct 2026
WORLDTECH WT-P40 40 m² THB 1,390
HITACHI EP-TZ50WO 48 m² THB 3,590
XIAOMI Purifier 6 50 m² THB 6,990
SAMSUNG AX32BG3100GBST 41 m² THB 6,990
LG AS65GDBY0.ABAE 61.2 m² THB 19,900

Room sizes come in square metres with no CADR, so the CADR rule above still needs the rating from the box. Filters cost extra: HomePro showed a Blueair Blue Pure 211 particle filter at THB 2,993 and a HealthProtect 7310i filter at THB 3,933.

Where else to look: Central Chiangmai

Central Pattana’s “Share the Air” campaign offered purifier sets at four Central centres, including Central Chiangmai, until 30 April 2026. It was a donation-style campaign and has ended. Central Pattana also says it is developing “Safe Indoor Spaces” in its centres, with HEPA filters and real-time PM2.5 monitoring.

Not confirmed: Seller room sizes in square metres are not CADR, so read the CADR on the box before you buy. No Chiang Mai retailer page was found for the box-fan filter in the DIY option.

Common questions

What is CADR?

CADR indicates the volume of filtered air an air cleaner delivers, with separate scores for tobacco smoke, pollen and dust.

How do I size a purifier for my room?

Multiply the length and width of the area and compare the result in square feet with the maximum recommended room size on the packaging.

Which rule should I follow in smoke season?

AHAM's general rule is a CADR of at least two-thirds of the room's area. For wildfire smoke it recommends a smoke CADR equal to the room's square footage. Use the smoke rule.

How do I convert square metres?

A square metre is a little under eleven square feet, so multiply your area by that. Then read the chart or the AHAM rule in square feet.

Where can I buy one in Chiang Mai?

Buy purifiers and filters online at HomePro, whose Chiang Mai branch is HomePro Ruamchok. Check the CADR on the box.

Do I need a HEPA filter?

Portable air cleaners often achieve a high CADR by using a HEPA filter.

Do ozone purifiers help?

Avoid air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone, a lung irritant.

How often do I replace the filter?

Manufacturers typically recommend replacement every 60 to 90 days. Replace sooner if filters look heavily soiled.

Does a purifier remove gases?

The CADR rating is for particles only, so look for an activated carbon filter for gases.

Is a DIY purifier any good?

A box fan with a MERV 13 filter is a cost-effective way to reduce smoke concentrations. The filters must be fresh, because dirty ones made it almost completely ineffective.
