UK advice says the 1669 line is part of a countrywide network and is free of charge. For a critical emergency patient the team takes the patient to the nearest hospital.

1669 serves only critical emergency patients outside medical facilities. In some cases a team is not sent because the case is not a real emergency, and officers may advise other services.

What to say

Give the dispatcher these points:

  1. Stay calm and call 1669.
  2. Say what happened and what kind of patients or injured people there are.
  3. State the scene location and the route to it clearly.
  4. State sex, age range, symptoms and the number of patients or injured.
  5. State the patient’s level of consciousness.
  6. State risks that may recur, such as being in the middle of the road or a gas-fitted vehicle.
  7. Give your name and a phone number that can be contacted.
  8. Give first aid as the officer advises, then wait for the rescue team.

1669 or 191 for an ambulance

The Tourist Police site labels 1669 “Emergency Medical” and 191 “Royal Thai Police”. The NIEMS page also heads 1669 as the medical emergency number. So 1669 is the ambulance line.

UK advice also says to dial 191 and ask for an ambulance. No Thai official page found says that. Treat 191 as a police number; use it for an ambulance only as a fallback.

If nobody speaks English

UK advice says that if you cannot get the response you need from the medical hotline, call 1155 for the Tourist Police or 191 for the Royal Thai Police. None of the pages found says whether 1669 operators speak English. The 1155 route is the one published for tourists.

If the patient is not critical

1669 is for critical emergency patients outside medical facilities, so for a non-critical illness go to a hospital emergency room (see below) rather than waiting for a team.

Passport, payment and insurance

Showing your passport is mandatory at both public and private hospitals. UK advice says all hospitals require a guarantee of payment before treating patients.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company quickly if you are referred to a medical facility. In August 2026 the NIEMS secretary-general ordered that insurance rights, facility registration or ability to pay must not be used as grounds to refuse an emergency patient timely emergency operations.

Not confirmed: No Thai official page found says whether 1669 operators speak English. If you need help in English, the Tourist Police line, 1155, is the tourist-facing option. No emergency line found for Rajavej or Lanna, so use a hospital that publishes one.
