Hospital Costs in Chiang Mai: Published Prices Compared
Chiang Mai hospitals publish package and room prices, not visit fees. At Rajavej a Standard room is THB 2,400 in total and a 12-item check-up is THB 1,290. Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai's Essential check-up is THB 6,900, priced the same for Thai nationals and expatriates.
No hospital page read for this article prints a price for a doctor’s visit or an emergency-room visit. Three hospitals print package prices, and one prints a room-rate sheet.
To get a number before you are seen, ask the hospital’s international desk for a written estimate of the consultation, tests and medicine. Ask what deposit applies too.
Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai asks for a deposit at admission and the total estimate before surgery. Its Estimator Team on 052-089-721 gives estimates, and the final bill can differ. A package price covers only the listed tests, since extra treatment is billed on top.

Public or private: what a foreigner pays
The Australian embassy list classes Chiangmai Ram, McCormick, Lanna and Rajavej as private hospitals. It classes Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital as a government hospital.
Government facilities normally cost less than private ones, but a tourist or someone on a short-term visa may be charged higher fees than Thai and resident foreign nationals. Maharaj Nakorn publishes no foreign-patient price list, so ask its service desk first.
Someone with no insurance or limited funds is likely to be admitted to a government hospital. Showing a passport is mandatory at both public and private hospitals.

Thai state schemes
The national health security (gold card) right is for Thai people: the first qualification is Thai nationality. A tourist or retiree on a visa is not in it.
UCEP is a state-policy right for a critical emergency patient. The patient is treated at the nearest hospital without charge until out of danger and safe to move, for no more than 72 hours. A patient who meets the criteria and calls 1669 is covered without paying upfront. Existing car-accident victim protection or life insurance cover must be used first.
No official text read extends UCEP to non-Thai patients, so do not plan on it. In a critical emergency the hospital claims a foreign patient’s cost from the patient’s own insurance.
A patient who arrives at a hospital cannot be refused treatment. Check now that your travel policy covers emergency admission and evacuation. Ambulance calls are covered in Ambulance in Chiang Mai.

Deposits, estimates and direct billing
Deposits and guarantees
The UK government says someone paying their own way will usually be asked for a cash deposit before treatment begins at a private hospital. It says hospitals require a guarantee of payment before treating patients.
Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai requires a deposit based on room category at admission, and the total estimated amount before a surgery or medical procedure. Its Estimator Team answers cost questions on 052-089-721 and says any figure given is only an estimate.
Which insurers pay the hospital directly
Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai serves policyholders from all leading life and health insurance companies and publishes an A-Z list of insurers with contracts. The list includes Allianz Worldwide Care, Cigna, GeoBlue Travel Insurance and AXA.
For coverage questions, contact your insurer; the hospital’s International Third Party Payer Services Department is on 052-089-844.
Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai also sells an Expat Card with 20% off inpatient rooms (room only). It gives 10% off medications, lab and X-ray, but not doctor fees, special items or promotion packages. No card price or eligibility rule is published, so ask before assuming you qualify. It accepts the TRICARE Overseas Program and the Foreign Medical Program.
Chiangmai Ram has extensive experience coordinating with international insurance providers. It met International SOS, Asian Assistance, April Assistance and Thailand Privilege Card on 3-4 March 2025.
US military members, retirees, veterans and families can receive care at Rajavej under the TRICARE and FMP programs. Its site menu lists an insurance customer care service.
Not confirmed: A consultation or emergency-room fee at any of the six hospitals: none prints one, so ask for a written estimate before you are seen. Maharaj Nakorn, McCormick and Lanna prices for a foreign patient. Whether Rajavej's room rates are still current: ask the ward before you book.
