Buy or Rent a Motorbike in Chiang Mai: Costs and Paperwork
A Yamaha Fazzio 125 cc rents for 3750 baht a month in Chiang Mai; a new Fazzio Lite is 49,900 baht. A year of rent is THB 45,000, a new bike plus a year of compulsory insurance THB 50,200. Both are partial: rent leaves out a refundable deposit, the purchase leaves out tax and resale.
On this page
The arithmetic comes first. One Chiang Mai shop lists a Yamaha Fazzio 125 cc at 3750 baht a month. Twelve of those rentals come to THB 45,000.
A new Fazzio Lite is 49,900 baht at Yamaha Thailand’s recommended cash price. Add a year of the compulsory premium and the total is THB 50,200 before taxes. Renting is THB 5,200 less over the first year, but each total is partial. The rest of this page covers what the sums leave out.
Renting in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai Bicycle rents two scooters, each with a day, week and month rate.

| Scooter | Day | Week | Month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yamaha Fazzio 125 cc | 250 baht | 1500 baht | 3750 baht |
| Honda Scoopy 110 cc | 200 baht | 1200 baht | 3000 baht |
Twenty-four months of the Fazzio rate comes to THB 90,000.
The shop takes a copy of the passport and a THB 2,000 deposit for most scooters, up to THB 5,000 for larger models. The deposit comes back when the bike returns in the condition it left, so it is cash tied up, not a cost. Cat Motors takes a money deposit, keeps no passport and returns the deposit after inspecting the bike and settling any charges.
The rental guide covers the passport, helmet and licence rules in full. Do not hand over your passport as a guarantee.
A shop’s conditions make the renter the temporary owner, responsible for anything that happens with the bike. Many vehicle hire companies have no insurance, and a renter could be responsible for costs tied to injury to others. The motorbike insurance guide sets out what covers a rental.
Buying new
The recommended cash price of the Fazzio Lite 2026 is 49,900 baht. The Smart Key version is 52,900 baht. The recommended cash price may change with the dealer’s promotion.

Used prices are not sourced here, and neither is a resale value. The cost of living guide covers where transport sits in a monthly budget.
What ownership adds

Compulsory insurance (Por Ror Bor)

The owner of a vehicle that is used, or kept for use, must insure it for accident victims with an insurance company. Nobody may use a vehicle without that insurance, subject to exempted vehicles. An owner who does not insure faces a fine of up to THB 10,000. The owner or user keeps evidence of the insurance ready to show an officer.
The premium is one fixed rate by vehicle type and use, and an insurer cannot charge more than the Registrar sets. Its table is stated before taxes and duties.
| Private motorcycle | Fixed premium per year |
|---|---|
| Up to 75 cc | 150 baht |
| Over 75 cc up to 125 cc | 300 baht |
| Over 125 cc up to 150 cc | 400 baht |
| Over 150 cc | 600 baht |
The policy schedule gives THB 80,000 per person for bodily injury and THB 500,000 per person for loss of life or total permanent disability. If the victim is the driver of the insured vehicle, the policy covers only preliminary compensation. Preliminary compensation for bodily injury is not more than THB 30,000 per person. The accident guide explains how to claim.
Registration book, plate and tax mark
A registered vehicle must have and display its plate and the annual tax mark. The annual tax must be paid, and an owner who does not want to use the vehicle must report it out of use.
DLT’s summary says annual tax is calculated by cylinder capacity, by vehicle weight, or per vehicle. The people liable are the owner and a person lawfully holding the vehicle, for example under hire-purchase. A vehicle with tax overdue for 3 years or more has its registration suspended.
Vehicle tax can be paid through the internet. Riding without showing a driving licence and a photocopy of the registration book carries a fine of up to 1,000 baht.
Licence
A valid motorcycle driving licence is required, not a car licence. Driving without a licence carries up to 1 month in jail or a fine up to THB 1,000. The driving licence guide covers the documents and fees.
Papers for a foreign owner
For registering an imported vehicle, a foreign owner shows two items. One is a passport copy with a lawful visa. The other is a residence certificate from an embassy, consulate, immigration office, government agency or international organisation, or a work permit.
That page covers vehicles imported for own use.
Buying second-hand: the transfer
A sale between two owners goes through the DLT office for the area where the bike is registered. The papers are the registration book and proof of the transfer, such as a receipt or sale contract. The transferor and transferee show identity papers, and the bike goes in for inspection. If either side does not attend, the other needs a power of attorney for the person acting.
The transfer papers include a photocopy of the Thai identity card for each side, with no document named for a foreigner. The nearest official list for a foreign owner is the imported-vehicle one above. No fee and no deadline appear on that page.
The Chiang Mai land transport office
The Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transport Office is the local counter for registration and tax. Opening hours are 8 AM to 4:30 PM Monday to Friday, closed Saturday and Sunday.

Not confirmed: Second-hand transfer: DLT publishes no fee, deadline or document list for a foreigner's transfer. Annual tax for a scooter of this class and used-bike prices: no official figure was found, so the buy side has no resale value.
