Tipping in Chiang Mai: What to Leave and What Things Cost

Tipping in Chiang Mai is optional. Street stalls need no tip, and a bill with a service charge needs no extra. Typical amounts are 50-100 THB for a one-hour massage, 20-40 THB for a delivery rider and 20-50 THB per hotel bag. Carry 20-baht notes.

A 50-baht plate of pad thai costs exactly 50 baht, and the coins are never expected. A 380-baht sit-down meal is different: most locals round up or leave two 20-baht notes.

Tipping is optional, small and in cash. Prices follow the same split: fixed at food stalls, negotiable where vendors expect it.

Hand the money to the person you are thanking, in baht. A tip of 1-2 baht is read as an insult, so round up to a clean note.

Restaurants, cafes and street food

Check the bill first. Many modern restaurants and hotels already add a 10% service charge. Upscale and hotel restaurants also add a 7% government tax on top of the meal price.

With the service charge on the bill, leave nothing extra. If service was exceptional, 50 baht in cash on the table is a bonus.

  • Street stall or market food: pay the price shown. Leave the change only if you want to.
  • Sit-down cafe or restaurant with no service charge on the bill (a 380-baht meal, say): round up, or leave loose change.
  • Coffee shop tip box: 20 to 40 baht goes into a pool shared by all staff at the end of the shift.
  • Barber: around 50 baht for a custom cut priced 100 to 350 baht. Under 100 baht, nothing.

Massage and spa

A one-hour Thai massage or street foot massage: 50 to 100 baht. A two-hour treatment: 100 to 200 baht, handed to the therapist after the session.

Budget THB 400 for a traditional one-hour massage at Lila Thai Massage, THB 650 for a one-hour oil massage and THB 890 for the two-hour herbal compress. A standard massage costs around 500 baht, split equally between the shop owner and the masseuse, so the tip goes to the person who worked on you. The tip is on top of those prices, handed over after the session.

Luxury spas often add a 10% service charge. An extra 100 baht in cash for the therapist is still a kind gesture.

Songthaews, tuk-tuks, Grab and delivery

When a driver takes you from A to B for a fixed fare, there is no need to tip. The guide to the red truck songthaew covers hailing and paying.

On Grab, tipping a driver is not necessary but always appreciated, especially if they went out of their way to help. You pick a preset amount, charged to your payment method. In-app tipping applies only to rides paid with GrabPay. You have up to 72 hours after the ride ends to rate and tip in your ride history.

For food delivery, an extra 20 to 40 baht shows appreciation, in the app or in cash on arrival. The ordering side is in food delivery apps in Chiang Mai.

Hotels, guides and day trips

Hotel porters get a small tip of 20 to 50 baht per bag, depending on weight and distance. Housekeeping does not expect a tip except in luxury hotels. A 50-baht note left loose on the bed may be taken as forgotten money. Put around 50 baht per day in an envelope marked as a tip on the pillow.

For a full-day group tour, 100 to 200 baht per person to the main guide is a standard baseline. A private guide for the whole day earns 300 to 500 baht. The tour driver gets 50 to 100 baht per day.

Where to get 20-baht notes

Tips need 20-baht notes. Pay a songthaew in notes of 20-50 baht. At the airport, break your 1,000-baht notes at a convenience store and build a stack of 20 and 50-baht notes.

An ATM withdrawal on a foreign Visa card costs THB 250 per transaction at Kasikornbank and at Krungsri. Withdraw once in a larger amount, then break it at a shop. See Thailand ATM fees for foreign cards for the full table.
