Medical Tourism in Chiang Mai: Prices, Visas, Insurance
Chiang Mai hospitals publish packages, not visit fees. The 16-item check-up at Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai costs THB 6,900, the same for Thai nationals and expatriates. Embassies list a Tourist MT visa for under 60 days and Non-Immigrant O for over 60 days. Self-funding patients are usually asked for a cash deposit.

Get the hospital’s letter for your visa.
Ask your insurer about direct billing and a guarantee.
Before you fly home, ask for a medical report and a fit-to-fly certificate if your airline needs one.
What does treatment cost in Chiang Mai?
Private “medical tourism” hospitals tend to be in the higher price range in Thailand, yet as a rule considerably less expensive than European or Western countries. Hospital websites print packages and room rates, not consultation fees, so ask for a written estimate before a first visit. See the room rates and deposits in Hospital Costs in Chiang Mai.

Pick by length of stay, then check your own embassy’s list, because the lists differ by country. Up to 30 days and a visa-exempt nationality: the exemption is for tourism only, so a treatment trip is the grey area (see Not confirmed). Under 60 days: Tourist visa for medical treatment. Over 60 days: Non-Immigrant O for medical treatment.
Thai embassy guidance (Kuala Lumpur) covers two categories: tourist for medical treatment (less than 60 days) and Non-Immigrant O for medical treatment (more than 60 days). It advises requesting the visa at least 15 working days before travel, online.
The Kathmandu embassy’s Non-Immigrant O list asks for medical records or a confirmed hospital appointment in Thailand. It also asks for a hospital letter giving the medical purpose and a duration of more than 60 days. It lists 90 days of validity and a period of stay not exceeding 90 days.
The Hong Kong consulate’s O(MT) checklist (last updated 8 Aug 2022, so treat it as older than the other two) is headed “Immigration may permit stay up to 90 days”. It asks for an original letter from a licensed doctor and an invitation letter from the medical institution in Thailand. It also asks for proof of at least THB 20,000 in liquid funds.
If you enter visa-free
Nationals of 60 countries and territories may stay up to 30 days for tourism from 15 September 2026. A visa-exempt visitor can request an extension of up to 30 days. Approval is at the immigration officer’s discretion, and you apply before the permitted stay ends.
The fee is THB 1,900. File at the immigration office covering where you live. For Chiang Mai, the main office is at 71 Moo 3, Sanam Bin (Airport) Road, Suthep, and the foreigner section is on 053 201 755, extension 20. Details are in Chiang Mai Immigration Office.
A Visa on Arrival holder generally cannot extend, except in special cases of illness that prevent travel. The DTV is also issued for activities such as medical treatment. For a treatment stay, extensions are handled by the Immigration Bureau once you are in Thailand.
Deposits, guarantees, insurance and going home
The UK government says someone paying their own way will usually be asked for a cash deposit at a private hospital. All hospitals require a guarantee of payment before treating patients. Showing your passport is mandatory at public and private hospitals.

In an emergency, the 1669 hotline is free and usually takes you to the nearest available hospital. Private hospitals run their own ambulances, usually for a fee.
UCEP is free treatment for critical emergency patients at the nearest hospital, for no more than 72 hours. Once a patient is delivered to a hospital, treatment cannot be denied.
Foreign patients are billed differently: critical-emergency costs are claimed from your own life, health or travel insurance. Keep receipts and medical reports for your insurer.
Most private hospitals have an international liaison officer who can liaise with insurance companies, the UK government says. The UK government also says you should always take out appropriate travel insurance. The first qualification for the national health security scheme is Thai nationality.
When you leave, check with your airline whether you need a Fit to Fly Certificate. If you do, request it from the treating doctor, who may not give it automatically. Full medical reports are not always readily available in Thailand. You or a relative should request a report from the hospital before discharge.
Not confirmed: What a first consultation or an emergency visit costs; ask for a written estimate. Whether Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai and Chiangmai Ram hold a current accreditation certificate; ask each hospital to show it. Whether a visa-exempt entry covers a trip made for treatment: ask the Thai embassy. Whether UCEP covers non-Thai patients: unconfirmed, so plan to claim from your insurer.
