Thailand Re-Entry Permit in Chiang Mai: Fees and Form TM.8

A re-entry permit lets you return and keep the remaining period of your stay. Leaving without one ends the permission to stay. A single permit costs THB 1,000 and a multiple permit THB 3,800. File form TM.8 in person at the immigration office where you live.

The permission to stay in your passport ends when the plane leaves Thailand, unless a re-entry permit is stamped in first. A foreigner permitted to stay temporarily who leaves without making a re-entry is treated as having lost that permission. Section 39 of the Immigration Act says the same about the temporary entry permit.

What the permit does and who can get one

With a permit granted before you leave, you can carry on for the remaining period of your visa when you come back. Three conditions apply to the application.

  • You must not be an inadmissible person under Section 12 of the Immigration Act.
  • You must be permitted to stay temporarily and hold a visa stamp in a valid passport.
  • If you are prohibited from leaving the Kingdom, you contact the relevant authorities for a letter of permission first.

After having received permission for temporary entry into the Kingdom , if the alien leaves the Kingdom it is considered that his temporary entry permit has expired. Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979), Section 39, English text as originally enacted

LTR visa holders are exempt from the re-entry permit. The DTV is a multiple-entry visa, with a maximum of 180 days per entry. If you hold a tourist extension, the permit protects what remains of that stay. The extension steps are in how to extend a tourist stay in Chiang Mai.

Single or multiple: what each costs

Two fees apply, and the Immigration Bureau fee schedule lists the same pair.

Permit Fee
Single entry THB 1,000
Multiple entry THB 3,800

A multiple permit costs THB 2,800 more than a single one, as a derived difference. Four single permits would cost THB 4,000 in all, more than one multiple permit at THB 3,800. If you expect 4 or more exits and returns before the same permission to stay ends, the multiple permit costs less in total. For 1 to 3 round trips, single permits are cheaper.

The fee is non-refundable even if the application is not approved. The full fee list is in Thailand immigration fees.

On departure day

Filing at passport control (international departures) at the airport on the date of departure appears on the Bangkok Division 1 page. That page names no airport, so a Chiang Mai airport counter is unconfirmed. Plan on filing at an office before the flight.

If you leave without a permit

Leaving without a permit means the permission to stay is treated as terminated, and the temporary entry permit has expired under Section 39. On a new entry the Thailand Digital Arrival Card must be submitted for every entry into Thailand. A permit granted before you leave carries the remaining period over.

If a stay runs past its end date, the fine is THB 500 per day, to a maximum of THB 20,000 for overstays of 40 days or longer. Details are in Thailand overstay fines.
